This page is to aid you in the configuration of Windows 95 Dial Up Networking to access your MegaByte OnLine account. This may require your Windows95 Setup CD or disks.

Part I. - Installing 'Dial-Up Networking'

If you are lucky you may have the Internet Setup Wizard (it is included with factory installed Windows 95 systems and also in the Microsoft Plus! Pack). To run the setup wizard, double click on the Internet icon on your desktop, or click on Start | Run and type in 'inetwiz'. This greatly simplifies the setup of Dial-Up Networking. If you don't have this, follow the rest of the instructions on this page.

A. Install 'Dial-up Networking' software:

  1. Click on Start | Settings | Control Panel - double click on "Add/Remove Programs" icon.

  2. Select the 'Windows Setup' tab. Double click on "communications".

  3. Make sure there is a CHECKMARK in the box next to 'Dial-up Networking'. Click on "OK" twice to get out. You may be prompted for your Windows 95 disks or CD.

B. Installing 'Dial-up Adapter' and 'TCP/IP':

  1. Click on Start | Settings | Control Panel - double click on the "Network" icon.

  2. Go to the 'Configuration' tab. You need to have the 'Client for Microsoft Networks', 'Dial-up Adapter', and 'TCP/IP' installed. If they are not here, we will need to add them:

  • To add the 'Client for Microsoft Networks', click on the 'Add' button and double click on 'Client'. Select 'Microsoft' on the left and 'Client for Microsoft Networks' on the right. Click on 'OK'.

  • To add the 'Dial-up Adapter', click on the 'Add' button, double click on 'Adapter'. On the left-hand side select 'Microsoft' and on the right select 'Dial-up Adapter'. Click on 'OK'.

  • To add the 'TCP/IP' protocol, click on 'Add' button, double click on 'Protocol'. On the left-hand side select 'Microsoft' and on the right-hand side select 'TCP/IP'. Click on 'OK'.

You may be asked for your Windows 95 disks or CD. Click on 'OK' and restart the computer

C. Set up the 'MegaByte OnLine' Connection Icon:

  1. Double-click on the 'My Computer' icon.
  2. Double-click on the 'Dial-up Networking' icon.
  3. Double-click on the 'Make New Connection' icon.
  4. Type MegaByte OnLine on the box which says "Type a name for the computer you are dialing".
  5. If your modem is not displayed, click on the 'Configure' button. Your modem should be shown in the 'Select a Modem' area.
  6. Choose a maximum modem speed that is as high as you think your modem will go. A good rule of thumb is to use 38400 for 14.4 modems, and 57600 for 28.8 modems.
  7. Make sure that the "Only Connect at This Speed" box is NOT checked. The 'Connection' and 'Options' sections do not require configuration adjustments. Click 'OK'.
  8. Click on 'Next>' button in the Make New Connection wizard.
  9. Enter the phone number 2361700. Make sure that you include any codes to dial out or to disable call-waiting before the phone number and separate those numbers with a comma (,).
  • Setup the 'Dial-up properties':
    1. Select your newly-created 'MegaByte OnLine' icon, press the 'right-mouse' button and choose 'Properties'. In the Phone Number section, make sure the Use 'Country Code and Area Code' options are not checked.

    2. Click on 'Server Type' and open up the drop-down list in the 'Type of Dial-up Server' section.
    1. Choose 'PPP:Windows 95, Windows NT 3.5, Internet' as your server type.
    2. In the Advanced Options Section, make sure:
      • 'Log on to network' is NOT checked
      • 'Enable software compression' is NOT checked
      • 'Require encrypted password' is NOT checked
    3. In the 'Allowed network protocols:'
      • 'NetBEUI' is NOT checked
      • 'IPX/SPX Compatible' is NOT checked
